A Really Smart Pen - LiveScribe's

LiveScribe’s Pulse SmartPen automates note-taking, so that you never need miss a word again....
Whether in classrooms, meetings, seminars or interviews, taking notes or recording conversations is an integral part of the proceedings. You need to painstakingly write down or record whatever’s being discussed, ensuring that you don’t miss out on anything important. Later, you may also need to sit with the copious notes or audio recordings, to sift the important points and make summaries or minutes for circulation or future reference.
The Pulse SmartPen takes the pain out of this entire process. Available in 2 GB and 1 GB flavors, the pen includes an audio-recording device that records what is being said and links it to what you write on the special dot paper, which comes with the pen. If you miss out on a couple of sentences, you only need to tap the pen to know what was said. The 2 GB version can record up to 200 hours of audio.
The pen captures images of strokes and notations, using a built-in camera, to record notes on the dot paper. If you’ve missed something, you need to tap the pen on a word in that section—the audio recorded in the pen will start from that point and you can listen to it again to write down what you missed. To make it work you have to use special paper which is made up of millions of dots that can be read by a camera in the tip of the pen taking 75 pictures a second.
Once you’re done, you can transfer your notes via USB to your Windows XP/Vista PC using the LiveScribe Desktop software, which you will need to download. The software organizes your notes and audio into sessions—you can search for specific words and browse your notes. As a user, you get 250 MB free storage for your notes on LiveScribe Online. You can also share your drawings or writings on an online community, where people can comment on each other’s creations.
You can charge the pen via the USB charging cradle that comes with it. The package also includes a 3D recording headset, 100-sheet dot paper notebook, three ink cartridges and a stylus cartridge, a case for the smartpen, and a few interactive controls—such as a calculator, menu navigation arrows, bookmarks, and volume controls—that can be stuck to any surface. Three settings are available for audio recording: automatic, conference room, and lecture hall.
The 1 GB version costs $149.95 and the 2 GB version is available for $199.95. If you run out of micro dot paper, four-notebook packs are available for $19.95; while ink cartridges are available in five-packs, starting from $5.95. For more information, head to http://www.livescribe.com/.

New holographic technology

Current methods of holographic photography might turn redundant in a few years time if the researchers at a Tokyo institute manage to fine tune their latest holographic image creation technique.

Current technology warrants the use of lasers and darkrooms for the production of holographic images because it is required to shoot the subject separately with red, green and blue laser beams before all the images can be "superimposed" to give that holographic effect.

The new technology is based on integral photography. This procedure in creating the hologram includes taking pictures of the subjects in normal lighting conditions. A video camera is used for this purpose. This camera has a "fly-eye" lens composed of a number of micro lenses. The same fly-eye lens is used to display 3D images.

A computer decodes the images shot by the camera and processes them into a 3D image with separate processing units for RGB colors. Each of these units can be processed separately and then merged together again and synthesized. The result is a real-time live holographic video.

The technique is limited only to small images right now - however, it is expected that the technology will evolve over the next couple of years to display larger holographic images.

Trojan on the prowl on Orkut

Indian social network's favored child Orkut is on a hacker's list. As per reports from WebSense, Orkut is being used to spread a malicious Trojan through a message in Portuguese.

An Orkut user gets a random message in Portuguese from a spooky Orkut member looking for a hook-up, who persuades the user to click on the given link. The link which appears to be leading to a social networking site results in a Trojan 'imagem.exe' injection on clicking on the link.
The Trojan then opens up the Orkut login page and provides access to the user's ID; you can imagine the extent of damage wrought by this.
So, we warn all Orkut users to delete such strange messages as soon as they receive them and to not click on them.

Blackberry Curve 8900 is Out

RIM (Research in Motion) has (finally) launched the much-delayed Blackberry Curve 8900 in Canada. The phone that was out for corporate customers a few days earlier made its commercial debut on Tuesday.

The phone, sans 3G, happens to be the thinnest full-QWERTY BlackBerry smartphone to date. The phone will be available for users on the Rogers network in Canada. There is no word yet on its release elsewhere, but its worldwide launch is expected soon.

Feature wise, the phone has everything you d want from a Blackberry. The device, which happens to be smaller than the Blackberry Bold, carries over the same screen albeit smaller in size. However, the resolution remains the same resulting in a crisper display.

The phone also sports a 3.2 mp camera for executives who would love to snap a picture or two. Although it misses 3G, there is some saving grace in the form of WiFi support. The 1400 mAh battery provides approximately 5.5 hours of talk time and 15 days of standby time.
The phone would be a good replacement for the fast ageing Curve lineup here in India. With adoption of 3G still some months away, the EDGE-enabled 8900 does make sense especially with the device expected to be cheaper than its elder sibling the Bold.

Sony's car made-for-iPod head unit

Sony has introduced its new Xplod CDX-GT45IP CD receiver, featuring the capability of supporting a wide range of auxiliary devices.

The features include a made-for-iPod hardwired dedicated input cable that charges the device and provides full menu control for most iPod models. All the iPod track data is displayed on the head unit's LCD display, while the player is charged.
The CDX-GT45IP player also provides a front panel auxiliary input for the connection of a MP3, mini-disc or cassette player. According to Sony, the head units enhance the sound quality of compressed audio files such as MP3, WMA and AAC files.
The 24-bit D/A conversion allows for increased accuracy in playback over a wide range of media formats and compression rates than other products in this category. The Xplod CDX-GT45IP incorporates a MOSFET 52Wx4 channel amplifier as well as two preouts for adding other gear such as subwoofers.
Along with CD and iPod functions, the CDX-GT45IP also has FM/AM & LW tuners with 18 FM and 12 AM preset buttons. The BTM (best tuning memory) feature allows easy tuning by picking up the strongest local stages and automatically setting them in frequency order to the preset buttons. Alternatively, the tuner allows options of auto tuning and manual tuning.
The CDX-GT45IP model comes in a retro, sporty look with red illumination buttons, and an intuitive operation. In addition, this set comes with Remote Commander that makes it easy to control the music from the front or the back of the car.

Imation launches Blu-Ray Discs

Imation has announced the availability of recordable Blu-Ray discs for the Indian market. The TDK Life on Record's (LoR) discs will come in four different variants, and are capable of recording at a speed of 4x.
The new discs include BD-R25 (single-sided, single-layer, 25GB) and BD-R50 (single-sided, dual-layer, 50GB) write-once type discs, as well as the BD-RE25 (single-sided, single-layer, 25GB) and BD-RE50 (single-sided, dual-layer, 50GB) rewritable discs. The 25GB discs can be fully recorded in 22 minutes, while the 50GB disc will take double the time.

The discs are coated using DURABIS 2 coating technology, which offers protection against scratches, dirt, and fingerprint smudges.
The BD discs also utilize inorganic materials in a two-layer structure composed of silicon (Si) and Copper (Cu). Laser beams melt these inorganic materials during the recording process, and they thus become a composite that helps in forming recording marks. These marks help the discs achieve longer data sustainability than CDs and DVDs.
The discs will be sold at all leading computer peripherals and accessories outlets, and the cost will be Rs. 500 onwards for a single Blu-ray disc.

Nokia Patents New Swivel Screen

Nokia seems to be experimenting with newer form factors. After giving us the dual slider concept with the N95, it's time for this new swivel screen design.

The company has apparently applied for a patent for a new form factor design at the US Patent Office. The weird design incorporates a large (touch) screen. The screen is hidden behind the QWERTY keyboard of the phone and can be "pulled out" in landscape mode. That is when it reveals the full size of the screen.
Interesting idea! If there is one company that can incorporate this in future devices, it is Nokia thanks to its large logistics and supply chain management abilities.
We certainly do not think Nokia is ready with any devices appearing any time soon carrying this form factor but it is a distinct possibility in the future.

This invention is the ultimate innovation for gym and entertainment enthusiasts. Once you appreciate its looks and design, you begin to realise how much you actually want to own one of these, despite it being out of many peoples price range for this kind of equipment. Maple Phone Developed By Yoon And Lee

Transforming a popular product into a wooden version is a bizarre development, but the cell phone has just undergone such treatment. The Maple Phone has been developed by two Koreans, Hyun Jin Yoon and Eun Hak Lee as they prove that phones do not need to follow the same trend of plastic products. The wooden phone exhibits a touch sensitive keypad and also a camera. For the touchpad to work correctly, we believe that some different materials are used, as this would be impossible based on wood alone. The phone is great from an environmental perspective, since wood is a natural source and completely renewable. Perhaps this will pave the way for future wooden products, for example wooden MP3 players, wooden laptops, wooden televisions etc.
The wooden phone does not look particularly appealing, and will no doubt be heavier than the traditional plastic. At the moment, it looks like a block of wood with some numbers and stickers placed on the front. Nevertheless it would be great to get our hands on one and compare it with a more conventional plastic cell phone.

Finger Print Identification For Passports

Biometrics is not exactly common in our everyday lives, but the technology holds so much potential that it is inevitably going to be introduced. One form is fingerprint identification, a technology which promises so much in terms of individual security and a far safer approach to identification. Up until now, these types of technologies have only been experimented with, but now Government ministers and the Post Office have agreed to implement ID passports with sophisticated fingerprint technology built in.
The current plan is to roll out the fingerprint secured passports in 2012, with some experimental cards being introduced in 2009 to Non-EU nationals and 'workers in sensitive roles or locations'. Youthful volunteers will then participate by 2010 and over the next two years the plan will be broadened across all UK passport applications. The proposed plan indicates that ID applicants will have their fingerprint submitted to the Post Office, and then have their application processed and passport created.

Solar Powered Auto Mower Simplifies Gardening

Keeping your garden in prime condition is no easy task, especially if you're getting on a bit and have trouble maintaining an attractive garden. Some enthusiasts take a great deal of time to maintain their garden, and take great pride in its appearance, so a device which achieves the same results, with much less effort must sound appealing. Well look no further, in terms of grass cutting, as the new solar-powered Auto-Mower is here to relieve you of the mundane task, freeing you up to focus on other tasks at hand. The robotic device will automatically keep your lawn trim and works entirely off of solar power to ensure zero emissions.
You can also program the Mower to create "islands" which represent flower beds, ponds etcetera. The Mower will navigate its way around these islands ensuring your flowers are not destroyed by this machine. There are safety features equipped, to prevent harm to small kids or pets also.
The Auto-Mower will be available for $3,100 and can cut up to a quarter of an acre, on a 10 hour solar charge.

Ubuntu to develop a version for mobile devices

Mobile Phone chip designer Arm is collaboration with Ubuntu to develop a version of this Linux based OS for the portable devices like Netbooks.
This would be a new field for ARM which generally develop products for smartphones and mobile devices. They aim to make available the Ubuntu for this platform by the first half of next year.
ARM said that they are aiming to showcase first of the new generation devices running this new platform by the time of the Computex show in June. Rob Coombs, director of mobile marketing at Arm said in a statement: “It’s significant in that it is taking Arm onto larger screen formats.”

The Matrix Cube Alarm Clock is one of those cool gadgets that you just either want, or think is a complete waste of time. If you're in to retro items and cool new gadgetry then this could be for you especially if you're a heavy sleeper. Apple And Sony Team Up For Video Goggles

Viewing goggles from the likes of myvu and Vuzix have yet to become commonplace, mostly due to the fact that you would look entirely out of place whilst wearing them on the train to work. There is a rumour that Apple are developing a set of video goggles, which will allow you to view video files through them, which can be taken from an iPod or any other Portable Media Player. It is also though that Sony will be partnering with Apple to create the ideal technology for the screen which resides inside the goggles. I for one am excited about this, as Apple and Sony joint venturing will no doubt result in a fantastic end product.
If the goggles receive as much attention as the iPod managed five years ago, it will be a massive product and one which could follow in the footsteps of the iPod, albeit a far more ambitious creation. We will need to wait and see if this speculation comes to fruition, and hopefully one day portable video viewing will be possible via a trendy set of goggles, not something similar to Cyclops from X-Men.

Draganflyer X6 Helicopter

The Draganflyer X6 is a cool new gadget which although misspelled, perhaps intentionally, offers a lot.
The Draganflyer X6 is a remotely operated, unmanned, miniature helicopter designed to carry wireless video cameras and still cameras. Operate the Draganflyer X6 helicopter with the easy to use handheld controller while viewing what the helicopter sees through video glasses. The Draganflyer X6 helicopter uses a unique 6-rotor design refined from an original concept that has been under development since early 2006. The Draganflyer X6 helicopter uses 11 sensors and thousands of lines of code to self-stabilize during flight. This means the Draganflyer X6 is easier to fly than any other helicopter in its class. The Draganflyer X6 on-board software is the result of extensive testing and development.

The Draganflyer X6 helicopter is a revolutionary reconnaissance Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV); it can be transported in a 5.5 diameter tube slung over the users back while always being ready to launch immediately. Fly it over hills to get a safe view of what is on the other side. The DraganFlyer is ideal for spying on the enemy in a safe and reliable manner.
